Workout Memes

I'm linking up (a little early this week) with TOTR!

There's one kind of meme that drives me absolutely nuts. It's the "fitspiration" meme. You know the type...it's the meme with a picture of a skimpily dressed body-builder emblazoned with the words "strong is the new skinny".
Sure, let's shame ourselves and pit women of different body types against each other. Sounds like a plan.
To me, these are barely a step away from the body shaming of "thinspiration" memes that trumpet the superiority of being thin.

Sometimes fitness memes get it right, but all too often they take on a kind of self-hating tone. They make exercise seem like punishment. They take joy in the pain of accomplishment. And personally, I don't think that stance is healthy at all.
This is the picture that started my rant today. It was posted in one of my running groups and many of the women liked it - and I get that. I understand that fitness can turn you into a new person in a way, physically and mentally. But we shouldn't be discarding the "old us" or fighting the "old us" as if she's an enemy. Why do we feel we have to hate ourselves in order to make positive changes in our lives?
How about this one, that shames your current body and basically suggests you beat it into submission because the way it looks right now is embarrassing and unacceptable?
Or this one, which normalizes the unhealthy idea that pushing yourself to the point of crying, sacrificing form, and puking is a good, healthy way to work out? Am I a total baby for thinking that you're going overboard if you've pushed yourself to that point? (I know this is a badge of honor for some runners, but I think it's unnecessary and unhealthy.)
Here's an exceptionally bad one...it's borrowing the pro-anorexic phrasing of "nothing tastes as good as thin feels" in an attempt to make it about fitness instead of starvation, but the underlying message is still there.

Some fitspiration does it right. It promotes being healthy and working out for the right reasons, and I wish we saw more of this rather than memes that give credence to the cruel, bullying voices in our heads that tell us we deserve to suffer because our bodies aren't good enough and need to be brutalized and pummeled into shape.
See, this one gets it right. Eating healthful foods and moving our bodies should be about celebrating what we're capable of. It should be about realizing that our bodies are the only one we get, and we want them to keep working - and working well - into our golden years.

You don't need to hate your body or yourself to strive toward making changes; in fact, I think we get further when we treat ourselves with the respect we deserve. How hard is it to do something that feels like punishment everyday, compared to something that feels like a celebration of our worth and value?

Honestly, if I never saw another one of these types of memes ever again, I'd be happy. Give me motivational blogs and running groups over this tripe any day!

What do you think of fitspirational memes?

A Runner's Mouth

Let's talk about weird things that pop into my head while I run.

During one particular run, as I chomped on the last bits of a Lifesaver and powered up to conquer the bridge, I randomly started thinking about that saying You've got quite the mouth on you.

And then I thought, what makes a runner's mouth different from other mouths? Quite a lot, actually.

Runners' mouths are full of...

...stringy, sticky spit.
Am I the only runner out there who's terrible at spitting?! Ah, to master the art of the clean spit-hock...
...bugs.
(Why this lady followed an accidental fly with various other bugs and livestock, I'll never understand.)
The worst is finishing a run and picking gnats out of your teeth! Blegh!

...swear words.
Fun fact: these symbols used in place of swear words are called a "grawlix".
Running increases my use of swear words by about 10%. I think the freedom and uninhibited nature of running just draws it out of me!

...gum and candy.
You all know by now that I love Lifesavers and gum during my runs. Do we really need a picture of it?! (Yep.)
I'm sick of mint gum so I've been giving fruit a chance. Verdict: I like the change in flavor, but this particular brand gets a little tough/flavorless too quickly for longer runs. Good for speed work!
...song lyrics.
Sometimes when I really want to just zone out and enjoy my run, I gotta pull out the big guns.
When it comes to singing on the run, nothing beats 90s power ballads, although Taylor Swift is a close second.
...motivational junk.

I'm willing to bet there's not a runner among us who doesn't use mantras or self-talk at least once during a tough run! I'll admit, I talk to myself all the time (and not only when I run); having a mantra to repeat helps me look a little less crazy.

What did I miss?
Can your mouth identify with this list?

Recite & Revive

I committed a blogger sin this week. I began training for my marathon, and failed to take even one picture. Shameful.

I'm not going to do a recap of the first two days; at week's end, I'll post a little update about how it's going. But I will say that I was tempted to walk on my run today (I ran outside and the humidity almost got to me) but I powered through. I know getting through obstacles like this will make me stronger.

Also, I'm loving my new LifeProof case and armband. I can finally run in the rain! (And splash through giant puddles...my socks were totally waterlogged by the end of today's run.)

A couple weeks ago I ordered a bracelet from OneEyedFox on Etsy. There are two mantras I've been using to get me through the hard parts of my runs. I'm a very visual person; sometimes just reciting the mantras isn't enough. Now I just have to look at my wrist, and there they are!

Archie-approved.
On the back it says, "transcend".
The bracelet is so lightweight I don't notice it at all, except when I want to. You may recognize the quote on the front of the bracelet from this post. The power of these words still hasn't diminished for me.

The single word on the back is maybe even more powerful than the front. It's amazing to me that simply telling myself to transcend whatever is giving me trouble in that moment is often enough to get me through the next mile. I rise above it; I prevail.

I'm learning all kinds of mental tricks! And to think, it only took me four years of running to figure it out.

Stay tuned tomorrow for a very special anniversary post!

What mantra helps you through the tough runs?
Do you ever shop on Etsy?
Do you have any lucky accessories?
