Last Week in Pictures

Monday: A nice little run with Kristin over the bridge starting at her new house. I love how close she is to the bridge! It makes running it much easier.

Tuesday: Volleyball practice. It was the first practice with just the 9 girls who made the team, and it was great to see them all working together.

Wednesday: A surprisingly fast five miles - I was in the 10:40s the entire time. My quads and knees weren't happy. I need to keep the big picture in mind - it's nice to run faster these days, but I need to avoid injury in these last couple weeks before race day!
It's hard not to push the pace when you're in awesome new shoes!
Thursday: Our first game! My girls played like champs and won in two (25-9 and 25-18). It was a great way to begin the season! The girls were absolutely walking on air, and I was glad to see that the team I've been crafting for the last couple years is really solidifying now.
We're the blue & red team. You can see me nervously standing on the sidelines - I absolutely hate sitting during games!
Friday: A wonderful six miles with Elizabeth. I like running with her because she's not training for anything and literally doesn't care how far we go. She's a very low-pressure running partner.
Saturday: Besides errands and laundry, I got some grading done. Progress reports close Tuesday before we leave for Thanksgiving break, so I'm working on catching up. I mentally prepared myself for my 20-miler Sunday...I was actually really excited for it...
Sometimes you just need to use the floor as a giant desk to get things organized.
Sunday: ...But then I got up at 3:30am and had coffee only to discover it was pouring...And would be pouring all day. It's actually finally stopped, but now it's sunny and hot. (I'm pretty jealous of people who live in states where you can run at any time of day because the weather is beautiful and cold right now.)
Cooler weather Wednesday will kind of make up for the delay I guess.
So, I'm planning to run shorter tonight and have my final LONG long run (20-22 miles) Wednesday morning. I guess I'm grateful that the rain means cooler temperatures. I'm lucky that this week is a vacation week, so I can make up the long run without waiting until next Sunday.

How was your week?
How far out from race day do you begin tapering?
What are your Thanksgiving plans?

  1. My week felt like a whirlwind and I can't believe it's back to work again tomorrow already! I like to taper 3 weeks out for a marathon but I've started it 2 weeks out and have still had a strong race, in fact a PR. Matt and I totally missed our Canadian Thanksgiving this year because we were in Chicago where no one was talking about Thanksgiving at the time, lol. Have a great long run!!!

    1. That reminds me of missing Easter two years ago due to Boston!

    2. I don't think I could ever miss Thanksgiving! It's my favorite holiday.

I'd like to get to the point where I can taper two weeks out, but at this point my legs seem to need the extra time!

  2. Congrats on your volleyball team's win! Seeing that picture instantly brought me back to playing volleyball in school. I bet you are such a good coach!

That's really nice that you'll be able to get your long run in on Wednesday!

    1. I really love coaching. I don't know if I'm any good, but at least the girls seem to have fun with it!

  3. I am in AWE of your dedication of getting up at 3:30am for your long run!!! I take it you don't work on Wed???? We have an in-service day and a lot of the teachers at my school are PISSED about it lol. I think about half of them are planning to call in sick, which will be interesting... I will be there!

It has been unseasonably warm here in PA so far. Nothing like what you are dealing with, but warmer than normal for November. On Saturday I ran in shorts and a long sleeve and I was hot. Looking at the weather this next week, it looks like my morning runs are going to be in the 20s! WTF???? The coldest it has been so far in the morning is like 40, and now suddenly this week it is going to be cold. I didn't even get my running tights out from basement storage yet so it looks like tomorrow am I will be in grey stretchy yoga capris. I hope they keep me warm.

Like Heather, I generally do 3 weeks for a marathon taper. Long runs are 20-12-8-RACE!

    1. I get up so early out of sheer necessity! It's still so hot once the sun comes up. I like to finish my runs an hour after sunrise at most haha.

We don't have work Wednesday. We used to, but the teachers hated it, so the county changed it. Same with Christmas break...we used to work the 23rd, and it didn't leave time for traveling for Christmas Eve, so they changed that too.

I think because the 20 was on a Wednesday, I'll need to change up taper and my final shorter-long run, but at this point I'm just glad I got 20 done!

  4. I think the only place with ideal running is San Diego ( though once people live there long enough they'll say anything about 80 is too hot and below 50 too cold - atleast I did when I lived there!)

    1. SoCal is definitely lucky! They have running weather all year!

  5. Elizabeth sounds exactly like my roommate- she runs most of my runs with me and doesn't care how fast or far we go. It's awesome! Good luck with your last long run!!

    1. Those kinds of runners crack me up, because it seems like most runners constantly talk about running and care how their runs go...but once in awhile you meet a runner who's totally laid back about it all!
