Here Comes Summer!

After our amazing weekend in Georgia, I came back to the shortest and most difficult week of the year: the final week of school.

Tuesday was a half-day for students, but we teachers stayed until 3:30...and we 8th grade teachers stayed until about 10pm. (The 8th grade commencement ceremony and following dance and cleanup kept us very busy.)
Mentally preparing for the last day of class.
Wednesday was another half day, and after the kids left in an ocean of tears (you'd think they didn't all have cell phones and internet access...or that the majority weren't enrolled in the same high school), I spent that afternoon packing up my room. Obviously this was a very exhausting and emotional day because students need to be kept on-task, but at that point there's not much going on to keep them occupied.
My empty classroom is ready for a fresh coat of paint and a good scrub.
Then Matt and I went to check out the house we're currently considering buying. (More on that as plans solidify, I promise.)
Major selling points besides the square footage, pool, and location? The backyard has an avocado tree, banana trees, a lemon tree, and pineapples!
Thursday was the last day for teachers. We had a hilarious and relaxing send-off breakfast, assembled the students' cumulative files to send to high school, and returned our keys. And that's all, folks. It's summertime.
Our hilarious principal and assistant principal performing their "thank you notes" skit a la Jimmy Fallon.
This summer promises to be busy, but in a good way. I'm looking forward to getting my fitness back on track, seeing friends, planning for next year, and unwinding after a long school-year.

I have quite a few reviews coming up for the blog, so keep your eyes peeled! I've added a new tab at the top of the blog; I'll be adding links directly to my reviews so they're easy to find.

What is your favorite summertime activity?
When you were in school, how did you spend your summers off?

  1. Favorite summertime activity is rock concerts! We have four planned for this summer, the most since before our oldest was born. And then just being outside as much as possible.

    1. Oh rock concerts outdoors!! That sounds so fun. We don't have any nearby; we have to travel quite a ways to get any real concerts.

  2. Oh Congrats on being finished! I finish on June 30 :D I'm dreading packing up my class though! It has so much stuff in it. I also won't be at my current school next year, so I am anticipating a sad Good Bye :(

In the Summertime I love getting up when I want, walking Lola and running on the trail. Having 'nothing' to do is the absolute best!

    1. Oh, switching schools?! Good luck! That can be so daunting but usually pays off!!

  3. Congrats on making it through the school year! I only started putting a couple things away and it already looks so empty. I try to leave up as much as I can if they aren't painting so I have less to do in the beginning of the year. Our kids are done on June 5th (half day) and then the teacher's last day is June 11. We have a lot of snow days to make up!

    1. Yeah, I leave stuff up if we're not painting, but they promised us that this summer they are, so I had to pull everything down.

That stinks about the snow day makeups!

  4. When does your school year usually start?

    1. Okay, the school years in my county are MESSED UP. If the county earns an A, school begins Aug 7 or 8 and ends at the end of May. But if the county loses their A, they have to start later and end later. So next summer I won't be out until June 19 or so because we lost our A this year.

This entire thought process makes NO sense to me, and what stinks even more is that when we start later, midterms are AFTER winter break, so the kids have 2 weeks off to forget everything and then come back for testing. When we start earlier, they test right before break, get their report cards, and quarter 3/semester 2 begins with the new year, which makes a ton more sense.

  5. Congrats on finding a house that you hope to buy -- it sounds awesome! Fresh pineapples and avocados straight from your yard sounds perfect.

In middle school and high school I always looked forward to sleeping in until noon during the summer :) My parents should have encouraged me to be more productive, haha.

    1. I was the best sleeper in high school. I once had a sleeping contest with a friend and we both slept like 13+ hours! My parents usually dragged me out of bed around 11am though.

    1. Girl, I'm not joking...you should vacation down here because once we're moved into our new house, we'll have the space!
