Weekly Workouts 6/6-6/12

Monday: OMG, it was the last Monday of school with students! How did June get here already?! I was at school until after 7pm for our annual Sports Banquet. It was really kind of emotional this year because quite a few of my 8th graders have been on the team since 6th grade, and I had to say goodbye to them.

I ate dinner once I got home and barely had time for a workout, but I did fit in 15 minutes of core work via the Nike Training Club app. I figure 15 minutes at 9:30pm is better than none at all.

Also, despite the brevity of this workout, I was absolutely shaking and dripping by the end. This seems to be a pattern on ab days!

Tuesday: 8x.3 repeats on the park's "track". Between repeats we alternated bicep curls and Arnolds (15 reps). It was really humid and we ate a lot of gnats, but it felt good. My legs and breathing actually felt really strong; it was "easy" to keep the paces steadily in the low 8s and high 7s.
LOL...look at the gnats all over my face!
Wednesday: Rest...kind of. Does corralling 135 students at graduation, dancing in heels, and cleaning up the dance afterward (still in heels) count as rest or cross-training?

Thursday: I did the same NTC workout as Monday's. I was just exhausted and wanted to do something that wouldn't take much thought. I honestly didn't even want to workout Thursday, so I'm glad I got something in.
Friday: The last day of school with kiddos! It was emotionally charged and tough in a lot of ways; running twice made it easier. I met Kristin in the morning for two miles before work, which put me in the perfect mindset for the last day, then ran 4.2 with Elizabeth in the evening, which helped me get out some end-of-year frustrations and feelings.
I tried salt tabs for the first time on this run and I think I noticed a difference in my energy.
Saturday: Rest. Mega-rest. Sleeping in super late and lying around all day kind of rest. Well, that was the plan. But after sleeping in I ended up doing a brief core workout before meeting Elizabeth for shopping. I'm beginning to like doing multiple short core workouts throughout the week instead of a single big core workout once a week.
Sunday: 8 steamy miles with Elizabeth. We started at 5:30ish to avoid the sun, and it was cloudy for the duration of our workout, which was nice. I had killer heartburn the entire time. That's never happened to me before and it was brutal, but I focused on just moving steadily forward.
The rest of my body felt great - I took two salt tabs and I definitely noticed a difference this time, but they made me want to puke because of my acid reflux. I had to walk a couple times because of the burning. No more andouille sausage the night before a long run!

How was your week?
Do you use salt tabs?

  1. It's prob better to do core stuff throughout the week anyway! I do my hip/glute/core stuff after each run (okay I skip once in awhile) and it only takes like 6 min, so that is not bad. Then other ab stuff is just on my lifting days!

    1. Do you think you get the same results from doing a little each day? My goal for the summer is to have some kind of abs by the end of August haha!

  2. I've been away from Blogger for too long. I haven't read anything in awhile so I'm enjoying catching up on your blog!

I love the picture of the gnats on your face only because I remember the first time it happened to me and I couldn't figure out what was all over me. I totally grossed out when I realized what it was, now it's just a part of summer running for me.

Great job doing your workout that late in the evening. Yes, 15 minutes is better than not at all!!

I've been battling with acid reflux for a couple months now. It's horrid when running. I hope it doesn't happen to you again!!

    1. I should have known better than to have spicy food the night before a long run! Usually that helps me avoid acid reflux...but OMG it was so bad!! Are you taking anything to help yours?

The worst is when the gnats get stuck to my chapstick or in my eyelashes. So gross! I can pretty much ignore them otherwise!

  3. I haven't tried salt tabs; I use electrolyte tabs from Hammer Nutrition.

I'm a big fan of short workouts! Especially short core workouts. Workouts definitely don't have to be long to be intense (and that's probably better).

I don't really dance, and dancing in heels would just kill me.

    1. Electrolyte tabs sound like a good alternative to salt! I don't like that the salt tabs needs to be kept in a plastic baggie so they don't disintegrate with my sweat!

  4. Nice week!!! I like doing a few shorter workouts for strength throughout the week instead of one big one. I think it makes it easier to actually get it done, plus I don't get so sore.

    1. Yes, I like that it's easier to convince myself to do 15 minutes of a workout than to have to dedicate a long time. And recovery is easier!

  5. I've been thinking of salt tabs (and have some), but hadn't yet dared to try them, I don't know why. But last Saturday's run was brutal and I would have benefited from them I think. Now that you have maybe I will.

    1. I will say they made my heartburn way worse, but I've used them three or four times now and I do think I'm seeing a difference in my energy and muscle-feel! I don't think you have to take them with water but I prefer to because otherwise they can be really dry!

  6. I'm always reminded that even short workouts are better than nothing. I think I'm going to have to try this core workout! Ugh...the gnats! They're so bad here already too. I do use salt tabs. They're a must for hot weather runs for me, but I even take them in cold weather when I'm doing a hard run. I get nauseated without them. Happy "School's out for summer!" to you!

    1. Now that I've started using them, I'm beginning to wonder why it took me so long to try them.

Isn't it so gross when you see a cloud of gnats ahead and you know you're about to run right into them but you have no other choice?! I just close my mouth and hope for the best! lol

  7. The gnats haven't gotten too bad here yet, but I'm sure it's coming! I always laugh when I look in the mirror post-run and look like I'm growing whiskers. Nope, just nasty little bugs!

    1. I always think the gnats give me an idea what I'd look like with freckles! :)

  8. I have used salt tabs several times. I find taking them 30 minutes before I run is what works best for me. They def help me and the way I feel!

    1. I'm still experimenting with timing, etc, with the salt. I'll have to try them ahead of time!

  9. I don't use salt tabs, how are they used?

Dancing in heels is absolutely a work out!

    1. So, the salt tabs I got say to take them 15-30 minutes into exercise and to keep taking them. So far I've tried them about halfway in to a long run and then another couple miles later. I prefer them with water because they're really dry and can make me cough taken alone. I'm going to test them out before a run and see if that helps.

  10. I think the tabs work way better than Nuun for me. Nuun tastes good but never seems to actually do anything for me on a run. I think the salt has made a marked difference in my muscle fatigue and general energy level.
