Monday: Elizabeth and I had did final classroom workout. It was tight - the furniture all gets pushed into the middle of the room for summertime so it's easier to wax the floors - but we got it done. One round of T25 Core Cardio and one round of a BBG arms workout.

Excuse me...I look a mess. |
BBG seems to be all the rage lately. I do like how hard it is, and I'm sure the results I see on Instagram are real, but I just don't think I could give up running for something like this. I guess for me, finding joy in the workout is more important than getting a "fit body".
Tuesday: Ah, our first day of summer break! Elizabeth and I took advantage of not having school this week to run later in the evening. It was hot and still, but at least the sun was mostly down for the latter half of our workout. We did 6x.6 repeats. My left calf and shin were super tight from all the jumping around on Monday (and also from my freaking shoes!), and my left groin felt weak, so I wasn't expecting a great workout.
|
We saw some adorable ducklings during the run that made each repeat a little cuter and more bearable! |
Mostly we kept the repeats in the 8:30s but a couple times we crept into the low 9s. Between repeats we did bicep curls and overhead presses. I took a couple salt tabs at the halfway point and my calf/shin seemed to respond well to that, but it may have just been that I was finally warmed up. Either way, this was a hard effort workout even if the paces don't show it, and I'm glad we got it all done and didn't quit early!
Wednesday: We used that free samples of BBG again and did the ab workout. It definitely hurt! We were laughing halfway through because we felt so pathetic. That said, I wasn't sore at all the next day and I wonder if the workouts are really as effective as people claim!
Thursday: Rest.
Friday: We woke up early and did a tempo run. Storm clouds were gathering and there was lightning, so we ended up cutting the planned 5 miles a bit short. We haven't done a tempo run in awhile and I was happy with it, but with the brewing storm it was
really humid and pretty rough.
|
One of my favorite post-run stretches. I'm not sure why we look so serious! |
Saturday: Rest! I watched Matt's paddle race in Pompano Beach and hung out on the beach all day. It was actually exhausting - you know how it is when you get too much sun! James and his wife Rhonda were there, too; James and Matt both had super races (Matt was on his brand new board and in a new board class, so I'm glad it went so well!) and Rhonda and I enjoyed lounging around and talking about books while the guys dominated the Atlantic.
|
At the race start... |
|
Matt sprinting to the finish! His race was 6x1-mile laps with a short beach sprint between each one. |
Sunday: I was exhausted after sun and travel, so I slept through our long run and relaxed all day. I usually hate evening long runs, but Elizabeth and I went out for 8 miles at 7pm and it felt really good! It was nice to have temperatures drop as we ran instead of the usual buildup of heat throughout. I picked up a baby snapping turtle and saved him from the road during the run, so hopefully I don't get salmonella.

It's honestly amazing how much better my legs and feet feel in the old Kayanos! Sorry, I just can't shut up about my shoe drama. |
All in all, a pretty good week!
Have you ever tried BBG?
ABK
"Sorry I can't shut up about my shoe drama" <--- Shoes are something runners are ALLOWED to complain about!! And the rest of us will nod with empathy because we have all been there!!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried BBG and had to google it to know what it is. I am immediately turned off that it is called "bikini body".
Agreed, it's such a stupid name for a HIIT routine and it's stupid expensive, too. I know I'll never actually buy the program, but I like borrowing the exercises that I find online!
Deletehaha like Meg I had to google BBG to find out what it was. Agreed that the name is stupid, but I guess I understand people wanting a structured plan that lays everything out for them. I used to like P90X a lot (before I was running) because you'd just start the workout and do whatever they said.
ReplyDeleteP90X has always intrigued me! But again, I just feel like I don't want to shell out the money for plans like that when you can pretty much find the moves/exercises online and craft your own plan!
DeleteI have thought about trying BBG, but haven't. And I agree about all those IG photos . . .
ReplyDeleteI do have some online programs (well, a lot) that I've purchased (but wait, there's more!) and I've been using those in addition to SSS. The last few weeks have been busy for me, so squeezing in my workouts have been kind of challenging.
You did great with getting it done, considering it must've been tempting to just relax now that school is over.
I think the best part about online programs is that they seem to offer good support through social networks. I think I'm also wary of buying a program and then either getting tired of it or just not using it.
DeleteI've never heard of BBG so just looked it up. I'm with you--I'd rather do workouts that I like than just doing a workout to meet a goal. Happy last day of school! I'm super impressed with your evening long run. I can't imagine doing a 30-minute run in the evening, let alone 8 miles! Sounds like it's cooler though, so I can see the benefit. Here it just gets hotter as the day goes on, and I'm pretty much ready for bed by the time it starts cooling off a little.
ReplyDeleteI think an evening long run when I don't have work the next day wasn't as bad as I sometimes remember them being. They can be pretty tough if you've been up and active all day AND have to be up early the next morning. Our weather has been so swampy lately, it was nice to run some of the long run post-sunset.
DeleteI like what you said about finding joy in the workout being the most important thing. Also, way to go saving the turtle!
ReplyDeleteWe actually see baby turtles (no bigger than silver dollars!) on our runs fairly often. We always move them to grass but sometimes we worry we're interrupting an important journey.
DeleteThat paddle race sounds very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI read your post last week on your shoes, I hope you get them figured out! because painful shoes are not any fun at all!
Everybody is saving turtles! A co-worker was telling me this morning he put a turtle back in the "canal" that runs behind our office.
My new shoes are coming in the mail this week. I can't wait to test them out and see how they feel.
DeleteTurtles in the road are really common where I live, but babies especially seem to be cropping up in the road lately!
Is that your handwriting on the white board? It's so nice! I think I've forgotten how to do a lot of capital letters in cursive, it's been so long since I've had to use it! I actually just google'd the cursive alphabet and was like "really, that's a capital I?! Crazy!" It makes no sense! haha
ReplyDeleteWhat a great week of running and turtle saving! I unfortunately saw a very sad sight this morning on my way to work involving a dog that no longer had it's head. Not a great way to start Monday :(
By the end of each year, my board-handwriting is impeccable. Actually, we have Smart Boards now so I don't write on the board nearly as often. At the beginning of the year, I'm out of practice and my handwriting is awful. ALSO, I write half in cursive and half in print, so it's quite hard to read if I don't try to be really clear on purpose!
DeleteAwesome job this past week, love all the tempo ad speed work you've been doing! I'm a little nervous about pushing the pace but overall glad to be getting back into the running routine. The heat is killer though!
ReplyDeleteYour paces have been so stellar in your last few races; I think speed work is going to go fine for you!
DeleteLooking at your activities! I feel interesting... Awesome! everyone is very exciting. I like... ^^
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I don't think I could stop running to do something like BBG. I just enjoy training way too much and honestly, I don't really care if I have a perfect instagram-ready body.
ReplyDeleteNice job on your workouts! You are lucky to have such a consistent workout partner. I need someone to come with me for my long runs!!
