Can This Count as Tapering?

Two weeks ago I had a solid running week and a 10k. Last week I had a low-mileage week and a 15k.

This week I ran 0 miles. I was exhausted and volleyball made things difficult. I could tell that my exhaustion wasn't normal...

Sure enough, I woke up today intending to do 7 or 8 miles and immediately realized 1) I couldn't breathe, and 2) my throat was on fire. I can't even draw in enough breath to cough, and my ear canals feel like they're burning.

I blame student-generated germs.

I'd run through a sore throat, but when I get a cold that affects my asthma, I need to be down for the count. My half is this weekend. I wonder if I can do low-mileage this week as I recover and still run the half in a semi-decent time.

(I was planning to do some bridge work this week because I haven't at all and I have to run a pretty steep bridge twice for this half...but I figure at this point, I just need to suck it up and accept that my training has been spotty.)
The bridge I'll need to be running...pretty darn steep.
In happy news, I'm signed up for the ALSO Youth 5k Turkey Trot! I'm so excited. I ran it last year (when  it was a 10k) right after my half and didn't have time to recover, but this year there's some more time between. Plus I get to run it with Matt, Steph, and Gordon! Fun times.
Nothing like a fun race that actually benefits a good cause!
Any insights into how to treat this week's runs?
How was your Halloween?
How do you fix a killer cold?

  1. Wow, that bridge looks steep, lol. You can totally do it!

I would suggest a lot of rest, soup and tea this week. Not that I'm a doctor, but that's what has worked for me. :) On Thursday when I went to the doctor for 'student generated germ illness,' ( I love that phrase, lol), I said, "I think I have strep!" He looks in my mouth and says, "I think you're right!" LOL. Quickest diagnosis ever!

I am still indulging in fun-size snickers bars and candy corn. :S I fear a sugar addiction coming on!

    1. I wish mine were a bacterial infection so I could take some antibiotics...unfortunately, I guess a cold just has to run its course! I'm glad your strep was so easily taken care of!!

  2. Drink lots of tea and make sure Matt takes care of you and does every little thing you ask :)

My mileage since Wed is at 0 and my knee is still bothering me so I probably won't run tomorrow either. It's okay though, YOU will be fine because 13.1 will be a breeze for you after going through most of marathon training earlier this year, and I will be okay because my running coach says so!

  3. I go a little insane when I get a cold, the minute I feel one coming on I start using zinc cough drops and taking airborne then when my nose starts getting stuffy I start using saline spray and taking Tylenol cold medicine along with the cough drops and airborne. The longest my colds ever last are three days so I guess this works for me. If you catch it early, usually the airborne will work. Your training sounds better then mine has been, I am running the savannah half next Saturday and I have ONLY run on the weekends, that's it, just one long run every weekend so we will see, obviously this race will not be a PR! Good luck on your run, I thought we had major hills in Atlanta but that bridge is not joke!!!

    1. I drank so many hot toddies yesterday I feel like I could be a spokesperson for honey and lemon. I picked up some Tylenol cold/flu meds too, so hopefully those help!

Training on one long run a weekend?! You're super woman!

  4. Ugh! I hope you feel better soon - and I hate student germs (note: I am one) - I hear people say they don't want to miss school, but then they get other people sick

    1. Yeah, there are quite a few kids I wish had stayed home a day or two. It's annoying for everyone, what with makeup work and all, but at least then we can all stay healthy!

  5. Oh my goodness! That is a STEEP bridge. I hope you feel better soon! Kiddo germs are no joke. I have had a minor cough for about 5 days. It's finally breaking up and I am actually coughing stuff up (sorry, gross, but we're runners and we're gross). My problem (well, not a problem I guess) is that I never get sick enough that I can stay home and lay in bed, so it just kind of drags on and on until I feel somewhat decent again. You are going to rock that half!

    1. I usually can keep illness at bay until holiday break, but not this time. What is with kiddo germs being so STRONG?!
