What I read this month: August 2025

I read one book this month early on—so early on, I'd forgotten I even read it! I chose one that I had bookmarked on Libby, so it was a bit of a random choice.

You Can Run by Rebecca Zanetti

When I downloaded this book, I was in the mood for a thriller. A few chapters in, I remembered where I'd seen this book recommended, and realized it was going to be a thriller-romance. Nothing wrong with that! While I felt some of the characterization was a bit heavy-handed and at least one twist made me roll my eyes (and actually is the reason I won't be reading the sequel), this was a pretty fun read.

FBI prodigy Laurel Snow is called home to Washington state after her uncle becomes a person of interest in a serial killer case. She begins to unravel the murder mystery while dealing with family secrets and an inconvenient attraction to Huck Rivers, the Fish & Wildlife officer she's working alongside.

This novel is definitely one of those romances that can be marketed by its tropes (Opposites attract! Forced proximity! Grumpy-Sunshine!), which makes the characters feel a bit flat and predictable. They were true to their assigned role even when it didn't quite make sense for the story. Also, Laurel is a prodigy, and so petite, and so attractive, etc. etc. etc. I mean, I get it, it's a romance, but these points are repeated so many times it got exhausting.

I liked that this novel took place in Washington. Laurel's mom's story and the unearthing of that family history was interesting. The serial killer mystery was gripping; this wasn't a scary thriller, but it was well-done. And some of the side characters were more well-written and likeable than the MCs!

This was a pretty fun read, and if the sequel wasn't heavily based on a character I don't really want to get to know better, I'd definitely continue the series. As it stands, this is a one-and-done for me.
